Meet the Team - Admin Assistant - Alysha

My name is Alysha. I’m 18 years old and have lived on the Kāpiti coast my whole life. I’ve known since I was young that working in the medical field was something that I wanted to do. To achieve this goal I pushed myself hard in school making sure to achieve well academically, all the while making plans for my future career. I finished college early planning to head into the military as a medic.

Unfortunately, my plans were halted when I had an injury and was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion. At first, I thought this was just going to be a slight pause, like an ad break on TV. I was so wrong. Suddenly my life was flipped over and I found myself struggling to complete normal everyday tasks, getting exhausted walking to the kitchen and unable to stand any noise or social interaction. In that state, I don’t think I realised how bad I had been affected but now looking back a year and a half later I see that a zombie is not something you want to be compared to.

Getting back into the workforce after such a long time being out of society was honestly scary. I had been unintentionally isolated from the world for so long I doubted my abilities. When I found myself being offered a job by Work Ready Kāpiti it was surreal to think that someone would take a chance and hire me after my brain injury. I’m so grateful they took a chance on me as I’ve gained the confidence to start working and doing life again. I’ve learned new skills and after working with them I feel ready and excited to start the next chapter of my life, studying paramedicine.

Thank you Work Ready Kāpiti for all your support.
