#EmployerMeets - Interview with Amy from Wakefield Lawyers
Recently we had the pleasure to sit down with Amy Webster a Senior Associate at Wakefields Lawyers who attended the Work Ready Kāpiti #EmployerMeets last year to hear about her experiences as an Employer at the event!
What interested you in attending the #EmployerMeets events?
My main motivation was to use my knowledge/expertise to help the community. At Wakefields Lawyers, we advise a lot of local employers, so I have a good understanding of what they look for in their staff and helping young people with their interview technique seemed like a good way to use this knowledge to help out. In my line of work, I unfortunately sometimes see young people who aren’t treated very well at work, so I was also keen to get involved so I could share some of my knowledge about minimum employment rights.
Did you meet anyone who inspired you into looking into youth as an employment option?
I was actually really impressed by the calibre of students who attended the #EmployerMeets last year. We have since had two students through Wakefields Lawyers on work experience to find out about all the different roles in a law firm, which has been great.
Was it beneficial to be able to talk to people from a wide range of backgrounds?
Yes, a lot of young people seem to think you have to be a lawyer to work at a law firm, so it was great to have some “wildcard” matches as it led to some really interesting discussions about other roles in the legal profession.
Would you recommend attending to future employers?
Absolutely, you might meet your next apprentice or inspire someone to explore a career they hadn’t even thought of. If nothing else, the food is great and you will get to practice your interview skills!
